Presents of Mind...

Buying gifts has ALWAYS been a cinch for me. I am usually very good at picking out just the right thing. It's usually because I remember something mentioned in passing or I get them something I think they'd like based purely on personality. There is one person, however, that I cannot figure out. My mother. She is an enigma in that department. It's been that way ever since I can remember. I think part of it is that she's just not a good receiver of gifts. She likes getting things for herself. She doesn't like being given something. Do you know anyone else like this? It's quite frustrating. So... I've decided the good old gift card is the best bet with her. I HATE giving gift cards to most people... seems like a cop out, but it's what I do with her. I was in a gift making phase for awhile. I've stopped doing that. I got much more enjoyment out of making it than the recipient got out of receiving my crafty oddities. This is all on my mind because Mother's Day is just around the corner. I need to put my thinking cap on. In most cases, however, I can rely on my keen sense of observation... HA! What a joke... I stole this from .... Guess Who??? Green... (thanks Green)...

i thought i was reading my diary Sarafina. I know a person like that, and it is MY mother.
She manages to force a smile but i always know it's not what she wanted. It is very frustrating indeed. But it is not our fault. Plus, people shouldn't treat pressies as a chance to get something but as a token of somebody's love. It's their fault if they can't grasp that.

Sarafina, I have a very hard time buying gifts because I can't make decisions! lol Actually, close family is easy, friends are difficult and I usual end up with gift cards...My birthday is coming up next week and friends are asking me what they can get for me..I hate saying " what I really need" But usally is " You don't have to buy me anything or if u must a gift card would be great as well.

Ps..Thankyou so much for your reply, it's greatly appreciated for me and others who might be reading and interested as well.

Have a great weekend. :)

Chloe: I agree. I LOVE my mom and she is actually a very loving person. She's just very awkward when given something. I think she just gets uncomfortable with gifts... same thing with compliments.

Heidi: I have been driven to just put a wishlist up on amazon.com since people ask and they press and press until I have to say gift card. This way I don't have to say gift card and they can pick something off the list. My husbands family is very into listmaking. I hadn't done that before I met him. I felt very materialistic doing it, but now I find it fun. It's a pie in the sky list + some very utilitarian items ( I love kitchen gadgets).

You two have a great weekend too!!

I'd probably get you the Expositor's Bible Commentary 5.0 CD-ROM collection or a smattering of spiffy stuff from Levenger - reading/writing gadgets, architecturally cool shelves for your books/CDs, etc. Question is, would you like it?? Thanks again for allowing me to burgle you repeatedly...

My mom isn't as much of an enigma.
I know she loves jewellery! Sometimes she makes it easier by hinting at what she wants :-)
I think you are very lucky to have that skill - or should we call it a gift of God.

I love it when people drop *wink, wink, nudge, nudge* hints. :o) It makes life sooo much easier. Jewelry is always a sure thing with me! Luckily my husband has good taste in that department. I don't have to coach him! I am terrible at dropping hints.

Thanks for visiting! Hope you have a great weekend!

Gina: Yes, I'm an agent. I have been an agent for about a year now, so I'm not seasoned. I was a librarian for 8 years. I got into it because my mother (a top producer here in San Antonio)needed my marketing & research skills. Just let me know what you want to know and I'll do my best to answer you... just keep following that thread on your blog... sound good? If it's private, just shoot me an email.

Nabeel: I think we're on the same page. There is something very wrong to me about giving or receiving gifts without significance. You are an empathetic sort (from what little I know of you), so I have no doubt you are a splendid gift giver - whether it's with your time, talent, or thoughtfulness.

Michelle: Thanks for visiting...

Gina: I got married in SA too... almost 5 years ago now. Hard for me to believe. I lived here in the early 90s for about a year, then went off to college and grad school and 8 years of library work. Now I'm back in SA and VERY happy that I am. Next time you return you should try La Fonda on Main or Los Barrios. :o)

Nope, Los Barrios has 2 locations. (Blanco & Redland)

You're thinking of Los Patios. Funny thing... that's where I had my wedding reception. It was wonderful! I should post a wedding reception pic soon... time to revisit the old albums.
